The Scopula fuscata is a type of moth that belongs to the Geometridae family. These moths are sometimes called "inchworms" in their caterpillar stage because of how they move. This particular moth was first described by a scientist named George Duryea Hulst in 1887.

About the Scopula Fuscata Moth

This moth is found in North America. You can spot it from southwestern Saskatchewan in Canada, all the way west to British Columbia. It also lives south into the United States, reaching California and Arizona.

Where It Lives

The Scopula fuscata moth likes to live in mountain areas. This includes the lower parts of mountains, known as foothills. These places often have the right plants and conditions for the moth to thrive.

What It Looks Like

The Scopula fuscata moth is not very big. Its wingspan (the distance from one wingtip to the other) is about 24 to 28 millimeters. That's roughly the size of a large coin!

Both its wings and body are a light tan color. They are also sprinkled with tiny darker yellow-brown or grey-brown spots. This helps the moth blend in with its surroundings.

Life Cycle

These moths usually have one generation each year. This means that the eggs laid by the adults will grow into caterpillars, then pupae, and finally new adult moths, all within one year. The adult moths are typically seen flying around in late June and early July. This is especially true in the northern parts of their habitat.
