Scorey's Early Life
Bakari Ward grew up listening to many popular rappers. Some of his favorites included Lil Wayne, G Herbo, and 50 Cent. He enjoyed trying to sound like them and would freestyle with his friends. Freestyling means making up rap lyrics on the spot. He started recording his own music in 2018. By 2019, he began to take his music career very seriously.
When he was a child, Ward loved playing basketball. He was part of a basketball team, either through a club or his school. His music often shares feelings and stories inspired by people he knew. For example, he mentions a friend named Leah in several of his songs. He also talks about Zachary “Zuly” Holloway, who appeared in many of his first music videos. Scorey's song "Victim" was even filmed at a gathering held to remember Holloway.
Scorey's Music Career
Scorey's first song, "Freddy Krueger", came out on September 1, 2019. This song caught the eye of rapper Polo G. Polo G saw the song on a friend's Instagram story. This friend was signed to the same music label as Scorey. After seeing it, Polo G reached out to Scorey on Instagram.
First Steps in Music
Just a few days later, Polo G invited Scorey to perform with him. This performance was at Webster Hall in New York City. It was part of Polo G's Die a Legend tour. Other rappers like Yungeen Ace, Luh Kel, and Toosii were also there. At this time, Scorey decided to quit his summer job. He worked as a janitor at Green Lakes State Park. This job had helped him pay for his studio time and music videos.
Joining a Record Label
While recording his song "Moods", Polo G asked Scorey to join his new record label. This label was called Only Dreamers Achieve. It was a partnership with Columbia Records. Scorey agreed and became the very first artist to sign with the label. His song "Dior You" was the first music released under this new record label. It came out on March 12, 2021. Later, Scorey was featured on Polo G's third album. This album was called Hall of Fame and was released in June 2021.
