Scotstoun Stadium is a large sports venue in Scotstoun, a part of Glasgow, Scotland. It is mainly used for athletics (like running and jumping) and rugby union.

The Glasgow Warriors rugby team has trained at Scotstoun since 2009. They also play their home games here, starting from the 2012–13 season. The stadium can hold up to 9,708 people for rugby matches.

From 2012 to 2015, Scotstoun Stadium hosted the Scotland Sevens. This was a big international rugby tournament that was part of the Sevens World Series. After 2015, the event moved to France.

History of Scotstoun Stadium

Scotstoun Stadium first opened its doors in 1915. It was originally known as Scotstoun Showgrounds. The land was developed by the Glasgow Agricultural Society to hold farm shows.

Soon after opening, the venue also started hosting sports events. Because of this, a large stand for spectators was built. The stadium had a major upgrade between 2008 and 2010. It was officially reopened on January 14, 2010, by the Princess Royal.

Scotstoun Stadium is part of a bigger area called the Scotstoun Sports Campus. This campus is a leisure centre open to everyone. It has excellent facilities for many sports, including:

  • Racquet sports like badminton, table tennis, and squash. It hosted big championships for these sports.
  • A swimming pool, which was used for synchronised swimming during the 2018 European Championships.
  • In 2018, the campus also became home to the Murray Trophy – Glasgow. This is a professional tennis tournament for men.

Stadium Upgrades and Features

The big renovation of Scotstoun Stadium involved many improvements. New buildings were added with offices and meeting rooms. An indoor 100-metre sprint track was also built.

Outside, the 400-metre athletics track was resurfaced. A full-size rugby pitch was created in the middle of the track. The seating areas were also made bigger, creating a north stand and a south stand. Together, these stands can seat up to 5,000 people.

In 2010, new artificial pitches were added. These include special rugby training pitches at the far end of the stadium. The stadium also has a modern strength and conditioning gym for athletes to train.
