Scott Daniels' Hockey Journey
Starting in Junior Hockey
Scott Daniels is a member of the Mistawasis First Nation, an Indigenous group in Canada. Because of his Cree heritage, his teammates gave him the nickname "Chief."
Scott began his hockey journey at 17 years old. He started playing in the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 1986. His first team was the Kamloops Blazers. After that, he played for the New Westminster Bruins and then the Regina Pats until 1990.
Playing in the NHL
In 1989, the Hartford Whalers chose Scott Daniels in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. He was the 136th player picked overall. Before joining the top league, Scott spent three years playing in the AHL.
Scott made his first appearance in the NHL on October 8, 1992. He played for the Hartford Whalers against the Boston Bruins. Scott was known as a strong player who could score goals and protect his teammates. He quickly made an impression by getting a lot of penalty minutes in his very first game!
Scott played 66 NHL games for the Hartford Whalers over four years. Then, he joined the Philadelphia Flyers for the 1996–97 season. With the Flyers, he played 56 NHL games. He was part of a special group called the "Dan Line." This line included Dan Kordic, Daniel Lacroix, and Scott Daniels. Their main job was to protect star players like John LeClair and Eric Lindros.
Later, the New Jersey Devils picked Scott in the 1997 NHL Waiver Draft. He played for the Devils for two years before he retired from the NHL in 1999. In total, Scott Daniels played in 149 NHL games. He scored 8 goals, made 12 assists, and had 667 penalty minutes.
Life After Hockey
Today, Scott Daniels lives in Massachusetts, USA, with his family. His daughter, Sydney, also became a hockey player. She played hockey at Harvard University. In 2016, she was chosen fifth overall in the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) draft.
