Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Scottish Prohibition Party was a small political group in Scotland. It started in 1901 and wanted to make alcohol illegal. This idea is called alcohol prohibition.

In its early years, a person named Bob Stewart worked full-time to organize the party. In 1908, Stewart and another important member, Edwin Scrymgeour, were chosen to be part of the local government in Dundee. This is like being on a city council.

The Party's Elections and Key People

From 1908 onwards, Edwin Scrymgeour often ran for Parliament in the Dundee area. Bob Stewart helped him with his election campaigns in 1910. However, Stewart and Scrymgeour disagreed about religion, and Stewart left the party.

Stewart then started his own group, the Socialist Prohibition and Reform Party. This group later joined with the Communist Party of Great Britain in 1920.

Scrymgeour Becomes an MP

Scrymgeour finally won a seat in the UK Parliament in the 1922 election. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Dundee. He and the candidate from the Labour Party, E. D. Morel, won against the candidates from the National Liberal Party. One of the people they defeated was Winston Churchill, who later became the Prime Minister.

While in Parliament, Scrymgeour usually supported the Labour Party on most issues, except for the topic of alcohol prohibition.

The Party Ends

Scrymgeour lost his seat in the 1931 election. The Scottish Prohibition Party officially closed down in 1935, even though Scrymgeour did not want it to.
