Scotty Probasco facts for kids

Scott Livingston Probasco, Jr. (born November 26, 1928 – died April 17, 2015) was an important American businessman and a generous person who gave a lot to good causes. He was often called Scotty.

Early Life and Education

Scotty Probasco was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on November 26, 1928. His family had a long history in banking, going back ten generations! His grandfather, Harry Scott Probasco, started the American National Bank. Later, his father, Scott L. Probasco, Sr., founded a trust company. This company was eventually bought by SunTrust Banks. Both his father and grandfather were very religious and attended the First Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga.

Scotty went to the Baylor School, where he enjoyed playing on the golf team. After that, he studied history at Dartmouth College. He also attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania to further his education.

Scotty's Career in Business

Even though Scotty thought about becoming a preacher, he decided to join his family's business instead. He became a leader at SunTrust Bank in Chattanooga. He was the chairman of the Executive Committee there.

He also served on the Board of Directors for Chattem. This company, based in Chattanooga, makes many everyday health products. These include things like over-the-counter medicines, toiletries, and skin care products.

Helping Others: Philanthropy

Scotty Probasco was known for being very generous and supporting many organizations. He was a trustee for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC). He also helped with the UTC Alumni Council and the UT Foundation.

He supported the UTC chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. This group helps student athletes grow in their faith. A special teaching position at UTC, called the Probasco Chair of Free Enterprise, was named in his honor. This shows his strong belief in American business values.

Scotty also gave money to his old school, the Baylor School. He supported the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce, which helps local businesses. He also helped the Benwood Foundation and Bethel Bible Village, a place for children who need help. He supported the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga and the United Way, which both help many people in the community.

Family Life and Later Years

Scotty Probasco was married to Betty Rowland Probasco, also known as Betty. They lived in Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, which is near Chattanooga. They first met at the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club in 1953. Betty was also a very good golfer.

Scotty and Betty had four children:

• Zane Probasco Brown, who is married to Greg Brown. Greg became the Mayor of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, in 2006.
• Ellen Probasco Moore.
• Benjamin Rowland Probasco, who has been on the Board of Directors for Krystal, a fast food restaurant chain, since 1997.
• Scott Probasco, III.

Scotty's sister, Alice Probasco, was married to John T. Lupton II. John was an heir to a large Coca-Cola bottling company. Scotty Probasco was known for wearing bowties and enjoying Honduran cigars. He passed away on April 17, 2015.
