The Scribner House is a very old and important home in New Albany, Indiana. It is located in Floyd County, Indiana. This house was built by Joel Scribner. He was one of three brothers who started the town of New Albany.

Joel and his brothers, Nathaniel and Abner, came from New York State. They named their new town "New Albany" after the capital city of their home state. The Scribner House is in downtown New Albany. You can find it near the Sherman Minton Bridge. It is the oldest building in New Albany.

Building a Home in the Early Days

Joel Scribner built this house between 1813 and 1814. He used trees like ash, oak, and poplar. These trees were cut down when the land was cleared. The house was designed in a style called New England Federal.

Inside the Scribner House

The house has two and a half stories. The first floor has two living rooms, called parlors, and a main hall. On the second floor, there are three bedrooms. Both of these floors have a porch at the back. From these porches, people could see the Ohio River. The ground floor holds a large kitchen. It has a wide fireplace that was used for cooking meals.

A House Through Generations

The Scribner House stayed in the Scribner family for many years. The last family owner was Harriet Scribner. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. This is a group that honors people who helped in the American Revolution.

Harriet sold the house to the Piankeshaw Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. This group made sure the house stayed just as Harriet left it. This happened before she passed away later that year. In 1977, the Scribner House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes important historical places across the country.

Visiting the Scribner House

You can visit the Scribner House during special open house events. These happen twice a year. One is on the third Saturday in May. The other is on the first Sunday in December. The December event also includes a special Victorian tea party.

You can also arrange other tours by making an appointment. Every year, all third-grade students in Floyd County visit the Scribner House. It's a great way for them to learn about local history.
