Seán McGinley was born in a place called Pettigo in County Donegal, Ireland. His father worked as a customs officer. Seán grew up in a nearby town called Ballyshannon.

He went to University College, Galway for his education. After college, he joined a famous group called the Druid Theatre Company. He was a member of this theater company for many years, from 1977 to 1989. Later, he started acting in movies.
