Mare di Sardegna
Map of the Sea of Sardinia.

The Sea of Sardinia is a part of the big Mediterranean Sea. It's located between the Balearic Islands, which belong to Spain, and the Italian island of Sardinia. Imagine a large blue area on a map right in the middle of these two places – that's the Sea of Sardinia!

This sea is quite deep in some places. The deepest spot goes down about 3,000 meters (that's about 9,800 feet!). This very deep area is found about 150 kilometers (or 93 miles) northwest of a smaller island called Menorca, which is one of the Balearic Islands.

What's in a Name?

Sometimes, different organizations have different names for the same places. The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) is a group that helps map and name oceans and seas all over the world.

The IHO sees the Sea of Sardinia as just a part of the larger Western Basin of the Mediterranean Sea. This means they don't officially use the name "Sea of Sardinia" in their maps and documents. However, people who live in the area and many maps still use this name to describe this specific part of the Mediterranean.
