Seah Kian Peng, born on December 5, 1961, is a politician from Singapore. He has been the Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore since 2023. Before that, he was the Deputy Speaker of Parliament from 2011 to 2016. He is part of the People's Action Party (PAP), which is the ruling party. Since 2006, he has been a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Braddell Heights area within the Marine Parade GRC.
Early Life and Education
Seah Kian Peng grew up in a family of six. His father worked in a printing company, and his mother was a housewife who also sewed to help the family. Seah was the third of four children.
He attended Raffles Institution for his studies. Later, he received a special scholarship called the Colombo Plan scholarship. This scholarship allowed him to study at the University of New South Wales.
Career Journey
Starting His Career
After finishing his degree with top honors, Seah Kian Peng returned to Singapore. He completed his National Service, which is a period of military or civil defense duty.
He then worked for Indeco Engineers, a company linked to the government. After that, he joined the Singapore Civil Service, which means he worked for the government. He also worked with the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). There, he helped plan for the future and started NTUC Healthcare's chain of pharmacies.
From 1994 to 1996, Seah worked for Sum Cheong Corporation, an engineering firm. In 1996, he went back to the public sector. He led NTUC Healthcare and NTUC Media. In 2001, he became the chief operating officer of NTUC FairPrice. He was then promoted to chief executive officer of NTUC FairPrice in 2010.
Political Path
Seah Kian Peng became a candidate for the People's Action Party (PAP) in the 2006 general election. He ran for the Marine Parade GRC. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Braddell Heights ward without anyone running against him. This meant he joined the 11th Parliament.
He was re-elected in Marine Parade GRC in the 2011 and 2015 general elections. In these elections, the PAP team faced challenges from other parties.
In Parliament, Seah served as Deputy Speaker from October 2011 to January 2016. In 2010, he helped create a new law to change the Maintenance of Parents Act. This law helps ensure parents are taken care of. He led a group of ten people to work on this proposal. The new bill was passed in November 2010.
Seah was the CEO of NTUC Fairprice from 2010 to 2022. He also led the Social and Family Development Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) in the 14th Parliament.
In April 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Seah helped as a "safe distancing ambassador." He helped people follow rules during the "circuit breaker" lockdown period.
Seah Kian Peng was elected as the Speaker on August 2, 2023. In his first speech as Speaker, he reminded all members of Parliament to act responsibly. He urged them to always serve the people well.
