Just to the east of Seals, you'll find a place called Seals Swamp. Its coordinates are 30°52′6″N 81°41′0″W / 30.86833°N 81.68333°W.
History of Seals and Camden County
Before the American Civil War, which happened from 1861 to 1865, Camden County was home to many large farms called plantations. A history book about the county, Camden's Challenge (written by Readdick in 1976), recorded 68 of these plantations.
Changes After the Civil War
After the Civil War ended, many of these big plantations were left empty. Instead, smaller farms started to grow and thrive. This led to the creation of many tiny communities. A lot of these small villages were later abandoned. Today, some are just a few overgrown remains. However, these spots could be interesting places for archaeologists to explore and learn about the past.
The Railroad Arrives
In January 1894, a new railway line opened. It was part of the Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad, which later became part of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. This line connected Kingsland and Woodbine. Seals was located right on this railway, about halfway between the two towns.
Seals was just one of many small villages that popped up in the area during that time. Other villages included:
- Burnt Fort
- Center Village
- Kinlaw
- Scarlett
- Walker Swamp
- Tompkins
- Clarksville
- Red Cap
- Ceylon
- Satilla Bluff
- Spring Hill
