Sean Jones's Musical Journey
Sean Jones first heard music at Saint James' Church in Warren, Ohio. He loved the gospel music and sang in the choir there. He started playing the drums, but then switched to the trumpet in fifth grade. His grandmother told him that his grandfather played the trumpet during World War II, which inspired him.
Around the same time, Sean became very interested in jazz music. His band teacher gave him two albums by the famous jazz trumpeter Miles Davis: Kind of Blue and Tutu. These albums helped him discover his love for jazz.
When he was in Warren G. Harding High School, Sean decided he wanted to be a professional musician. He studied both classical trumpet and jazz. In 2000, he earned a master's degree from Rutgers University. There, he learned from Professor William Fielder, who also taught other famous musicians like Wynton Marsalis.
Sean has played with many well-known musicians and groups. He has performed with artists like Tia Fuller, Marcus Miller, and Jimmy Heath.
In 2004, Sean joined the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra for six months. After that, Wynton Marsalis asked him to join the group as a full-time trumpet player. Sean later became the lead trumpet player for the orchestra. Around the same time, he also became a music professor at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.
In 2011, Sean performed in a special concert called "A Tribute to Miles." He played alongside jazz legends like Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and Marcus Miller.
Sean Jones has also taught at other music schools. He was a professor at Oberlin Conservatory and led the Brass Department at Berklee College of Music. Today, he is the head of the jazz studies department at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. He also helps lead the Jazz Education Network (JEN).
