Who Was Sebastián Lartaún?

Sebastián Lartaún was a prelate, which is a high-ranking religious leader in the Catholic Church. His main job was to be the Bishop of Cusco. A bishop is like a spiritual leader for a specific area, guiding churches and people.

Becoming a Bishop

Sebastián Lartaún was chosen to be the Bishop of Cusco on September 4, 1570. This happened when Pope Pius V was the leader of the Catholic Church.

About a year later, on August 12, 1571, he was officially made a bishop. This special ceremony is called a consecration. It was performed by Diego Ramírez Sedeño de Fuenleal, who was the Bishop of Pamplona. Two other bishops, Alfonso Merchante de Valeria and Gonzalo Herrera Olivares, also helped in the ceremony.

His Time as Bishop

Sebastián Lartaún served as the Bishop of Cusco for many years. He continued in this role until his death on October 9, 1583.

During his time as bishop, he also helped other religious leaders. For example, in 1582, he was a main helper in the consecration of Alfonso Guerra. Alfonso Guerra later became the Bishop of Paraguay.
