Sebastian Aho's Hockey Journey
Sebastian Aho started his hockey career in Sweden. He played for a team called IF Björklöven when he was young. Later, he moved to another Swedish club, Skellefteå AIK.
Playing in Sweden's Top League
Sebastian Aho made his first appearance in Sweden's top hockey league, the Elitserien, during the 2012–13 season. He was still very young when he played his first game for Skellefteå AIK. In May 2013, he signed a new four-year contract with the club.
After helping Skellefteå AIK win their second championship in a row, Aho was seen as one of the best young European players for the 2014 NHL Draft. However, he was not picked in that draft. This was because he was considered a bit small for an NHL player at the time.
He continued to play for Skellefteå AIK. In the 2014–15 season, he played his first full season in the SHL. He helped his team reach the finals for the third time in a row. He scored 9 points in 41 games that season. After this, he was again ranked among the top players for the 2015 NHL Draft.
Joining the New York Islanders
Sebastian Aho was finally drafted in 2017. The New York Islanders chose him in the fifth round, as the 139th player overall. This happened on June 24, 2017. Soon after, on July 5, 2017, he signed a three-year contract with the Islanders.
After attending training camp, Aho was sent to the Islanders' minor league team, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. This team plays in the American Hockey League (AHL). He started the 2017–18 season there.
On December 28, 2017, Sebastian Aho was called up to play in the NHL. He played his first NHL game on December 31 against the Colorado Avalanche. A few days later, on January 7, 2018, he scored his first NHL goal in a game against the New Jersey Devils.
After the 2018–19 NHL season training camp, Aho was sent back to the Sound Tigers. In January 2019, he was chosen to represent the Sound Tigers at the AHL All-Star Classic, which is a special game for the best players in the league.
Moving to the Pittsburgh Penguins
After playing for the Islanders organization for seven seasons, Sebastian Aho became a free agent. This means he could sign with any team he wanted. On July 2, 2024, he signed a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
