Security Square Mall is a large shopping center in Woodlawn, Maryland. This area is a suburb near the city of Baltimore in the United States. The mall has more than 100 different stores and places to eat. It also has a food court where you can grab a quick meal.

Two of its main stores, called "anchor stores," are Burlington and Macy's. Anchor stores are usually big department stores that help attract shoppers to the mall. One part of the mall is known as Grand Village Plaza. This section used to have many Korean shops and restaurants. However, most of these businesses closed by 2010. Security Square Mall is also located right next to the North American School of Trades.

Mall History

Security Square Mall first opened its doors in 1972. When it first opened, its main anchor stores were Sears, Hecht's, and Hochschild Kohn's.

Main Stores Over Time

Over the years, the mall's main stores have changed a lot.

  • Hochschild Kohn's store was sold to Hutzler's, which then closed in 1989.
  • After that, Montgomery Ward took over the space. They moved from a different location in Catonsville.
  • In 1997, a store called Woolworth closed. Its spot was then taken by Burlington Coat Factory.
  • Montgomery Ward closed in 2001. Three years later, Modell's Sporting Goods opened there.
  • JCPenney also closed its store in 2001 because sales were going down.
  • In 2003, the two-story JCPenney space became Seoul Plaza. This was like a "mall within a mall" with many Korean shops and restaurants. It also had a large supermarket called Grand Mart, which closed in 2008.
  • Modell's Sporting Goods closed in mid-2008.
  • In 2005, a home goods store called Anna's Linens opened its first Maryland store at Security Square.
  • One year later, in 2006, Hecht's changed its name and became Macy's.
  • In 2018, Seoul Plaza was renamed Grand Village Plaza.
  • On August 6, 2019, it was announced that Sears would close its doors in October 2019. This left Burlington and Macy's as the only main anchor stores still open at the mall.

Mall Upgrades

A company called Capital Investment Associates bought Security Square Mall. They hired Hicks & Rotner Retail, Inc. to help manage the stores. The new owners wanted to make the mall better and more modern. They brought in eight new stores, including a relocated Hecht's. They also updated parts of the mall, like the food court, the restrooms, and the outdoor areas.

In 1999, the mall made its security even stronger. They moved the security offices to the center of the mall to make it easier to find help.

Getting There

Security Square Mall is very close to Exit 17 of the Baltimore Beltway. If you are on I-70, you can't directly get to Exit 17. However, there is an exit to Security Boulevard from the end of I-70. This exit is about 2 mi (3.2 km) from the mall.

The mall's parking lot is also a main stop for several Maryland Transit Administration bus routes. Some buses even run to other nearby places between 1 AM and 6 AM when the mall's bus stop is closed.
