Sedgefield is a community located within the city of Greensboro, North Carolina. It is found in Guilford County, in the state of North Carolina, United States.

A Look at Sedgefield's History

Sedgefield began as a large piece of land bought by a New York executive named John Cobb. He purchased 3,660 acres to create a hunting preserve. He named it Sedgefield because of the "sedge broom" plants growing there.

How Sedgefield Became a Community

After John Cobb passed away in 1923, a company called Southern Real Estate Co. bought the land. They had big plans to build a new community. A major investor in the company, A.W. McAlister, even built the main office for his insurance company, Pilot Life, in Sedgefield. This building was later recognized as a historic place in 2022.

The Famous Golf Course

In 1929, Southern Real Estate built the first 18-hole golf course at Sedgefield Country Club. They also built an inn designed in the Tudor style. The golf course was designed by Donald Ross, a very famous golf course architect. The plan was for Sedgefield to become a well-known resort, similar to Pinehurst.

However, the Great Depression (a time of severe economic hardship) slowed down these plans. A second golf course and a business area were never built. Even so, Sedgefield grew into a community. It had its own services like sewage and water, and even sheriff's deputies who acted as police. Even when nearby cities like Greensboro and High Point grew closer, Sedgefield chose not to become an officially incorporated town.

Sedgefield and Golf Tournaments

Sedgefield has a long history with professional golf. It was the first home for the Greater Greensboro Open golf tournament, which started in 1938. The tournament was held there many times until 1976. In 2008, the tournament, now called the Wyndham Championship, returned to Sedgefield. The original inn building became the golf course clubhouse in 1992.

Where is Sedgefield Located?

Sedgefield is located at a specific point on the map, known as its latitude and longitude. Its latitude is 36.015 degrees North, and its longitude is -79.897 degrees West. The land in Sedgefield is about 873 feet above sea level.

How to Get Around Sedgefield

Sedgefield has several important roads that help people travel. Groometown Road connects to NC 62. Another main road is High Point Road, which was later renamed Gate City Boulevard. This road is a key route for drivers coming from places like the Four Seasons Town Centre and the Coliseum to reach downtown Sedgefield.

Originally, High Point Road was the only way to get from the mall and coliseum to Jamestown through Sedgefield. But in 2016, a new bypass was built. This new road is like an expressway, making travel faster. The old route still uses the name High Point Road.
