Seelyville is a small town located in Lost Creek Township, Vigo County, in the state of Indiana, United States. In 2020, about 1,012 people lived there. It is part of the larger Terre Haute area.

History of Seelyville

Seelyville was first known as "Woodsmills." The town was planned by a person named Moddisett.

How Seelyville Got Its Name

When the Terre Haute and Eastern Railroad was built, a small train stop was created. Jonas Seely became the station master there. Because of him, the stop was first called "Seely Station." Later, its name changed to "Seelyville Station," and then just Seelyville.

Early Industries in Seelyville

The town grew a lot when the McKeen coal mine opened. This was one of the first coal mines in the county. The mine closed in 1879, but other mines kept operating into the early 1900s. A post office was also opened in Seelyville in 1878.

Seelyville is located at 39°29′32″N 87°15′59″W / 39.49222°N 87.26639°W / 39.49222; -87.26639. It is found east of Terre Haute along U.S. Route 40.
