Richard Mirando, better known as Seen, is a famous American graffiti artist. Many people call him the "Godfather of Graffiti" because he is one of the best-known graffiti artists in the world.
Seen started painting on the New York City Subway trains in 1973. He was born in the Bronx, New York City.
Seen's Early Art Journey
For 16 years, Seen painted amazing art all over New York City. His art was especially easy to spot on the 2, 5, and 6 subway lines. He created many "whole-car top-to-bottoms." This means he painted entire subway cars from top to bottom. Many of these artworks became famous symbols of that time.
In the early 1980s, Seen began to create art on canvas. These paintings were shown in art galleries and bought by museums and private collectors. He kept painting New York City subway trains until 1989. This was much longer than many other artists, who stopped because of pressure from the MTA. Seen was even featured in a 1983 TV show called Style Wars, which was about graffiti.
Beyond Subway Art
In the late 1980s, Seen also started doing tattoo art. He opened a tattoo shop called Tattoo Seen. It became one of the most successful tattoo studios in New York City.
More recently, Seen has explored new types of art. He creates three-dimensional sculptures. He also makes art using different materials, often finding old or discarded items on the street. He has even hand-painted maps of the New York subway system. Seen's art is still shown around the world. He sometimes works with other famous artists, like Banksy.
In 2009, the Seen Gallery opened in Paris, France. Later, it became the Seen Studios. Seen also enjoys painting comic book heroes. He has his own clothing line that features his unique lettering and comic hero designs on t-shirts.
