Segra Park is a cool baseball park located in Columbia, South Carolina. It used to be called Spirit Communications Park. This stadium is the home field for the Columbia Fireflies. Segra Park is a special place for baseball fans in Columbia. It brings exciting games and events to the city. The stadium has seen many thrilling moments since it opened.
Why Columbia Needed a New Ballpark
For many years, Columbia did not have a professional baseball team. The last team, the Capital City Bombers, moved away in 2004. This left a big empty space for baseball fans.
City leaders wanted to bring minor league baseball back. They approved plans in 2014 to build a brand-new stadium. This new park would attract a team to Columbia.
Building a Modern Stadium
Construction on the new park began on January 6, 2015. A famous company called Populous designed the stadium. They are known for building many sports venues.
The stadium cost about $37 million to build. Most of the money came from public funds. The baseball team also helped pay for it.
In May 2015, a team called the Savannah Sand Gnats announced big news. They would move to Columbia for the 2016 season. The team changed its name to the Columbia Fireflies.
The Fireflies played their first game at the new park on April 14, 2016. They won 4–1 against the Greenville Drive. A huge crowd of 9,077 people came to watch.
A Top-Rated Park
In its first year, the stadium won a big award. Ballpark Digest named it the 2016 Ballpark of the Year. This was a special honor for a brand-new stadium.
A New Name for the Park
The stadium was first known as Spirit Communications Park. This name came from a local company. In January 2019, that company merged with another.
Because of this merger, the park got a new name. It became known as Segra Park. This new name reflects the new company.

Segra Park is not just for baseball games. It also hosts other fun events. For example, on September 7, 2018, it held a big music concert.
