Semih Sancar (born 1911, died 1984) was an important Turkish military leader. He served as the Chief of the Turkish General Staff from 1973 to 1978. This was a key period for Turkey, including the 1974 Cyprus War. Before this top role, he was the Commander of the Turkish Land Forces from 1972 to 1973. He also led the Turkish Gendarmerie from 1969 to 1970.

Early Military Career
Semih Sancar began his military career in 1930. He steadily rose through the ranks. In 1960, he became a brigadier general. Three years later, in 1963, he was promoted to major general. By 1964, he was a lieutenant general. Finally, in 1969, he reached the highest rank of General.
Important Commands
During his career, General Sancar held many important positions. As a brigadier general, he commanded the 4th Division. He also worked in key departments like the Joint Chiefs of Staff and General Staff Operations.
As a major general, he was the acting commander of the 5th Corps. Later, as a lieutenant general, he led the Army Education Corps Command. He also commanded the 9th Corps.
Leading the Turkish Armed Forces
On August 29, 1969, General Sancar became the General Commander of the Gendarmerie. He held this position for one year. From 1970 to 1972, he commanded the Second Army Command.
On August 28, 1972, he was appointed Commander of the Turkish Land Forces. This was a very important role.
Chief of General Staff
General Sancar reached the peak of his career on March 6, 1973. He was appointed the 16th Chief of the Turkish General Staff. In this role, he was the top commander of the entire Turkish Armed Forces.
He led the Turkish military during the Cyprus War in 1974. This was a major event in Turkish history. General Sancar retired from his position on March 7, 1978.
