Seminola facts for kids

Seminola (also called Seminola City) is a neighborhood in Hialeah, Florida, United States. It has a special history because it was first settled by African American families.

This area is located in the city of Hialeah. Its current borders are West 25th and West 26th Streets to the north. West 8th Avenue is to the west, and the Hialeah Expressway is to the south. Red Road forms its eastern border.

Seminola's History

Seminola was created in 1924. It was built for the African American workers who helped construct the nearby Hialeah Park Race Track. This race track is just west of the neighborhood.

Over time, Seminola kept its unique identity. It was not fully taken over by the industrial areas around it. This was partly due to its location and its community ties.

Changes in Population

When Seminola was first built, almost all its residents were African American. By the 1970s, this began to change. Many original residents moved to other places. At the same time, many Cuban exiles moved into Hialeah. This led to a shift in the neighborhood's population.

By 2010, the census showed that 25.3% of the people in Seminola were African American. About 73.2% of the residents were Hispanic.

Important Places in Seminola

Even with the changes, some important parts of Seminola's history remain. There are still three churches in the neighborhood that were started by African American communities. You can also find several local stores.

Cotson Park is another key spot in Seminola. This park was named after a local African American activist. It serves as a community gathering place.
