Alapin's Chess Legacy

Semyon Alapin is most remembered today for his ideas in chess openings. A chess opening is the first few moves players make in a game. He came up with many different ways to start games.

While many of his ideas are not used much today, one is still very important: the Alapin's Variation in the Sicilian Defence. This is a popular way to start a game and is often used by top chess players called grandmasters.

What is the Sicilian Defence?

The Sicilian Defence is a common way for the Black pieces to respond to White's first move (1. e4). It's a very active and popular opening.

Alapin's Variation in the Sicilian Defence

Alapin's special move in the Sicilian Defence is 2. c3. This move helps White control the center of the board and prepare to move their pawns forward.
