Senkichi Taniguchi (谷口 千吉, Taniguchi Senkichi) (February 19, 1912 – October 29, 2007) was a Japanese film director and screenwriter.
Born in Tokyo, Japan, Senkichi Taniguchi went to Waseda University. He left early because he was involved with a theater group. In 1933, he joined P.C.L., a company that later became Toho Studios. There, he worked as an assistant director with his good friend, the famous filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. They learned from director Kajirō Yamamoto.

Early Career and First Films
Taniguchi directed his first full-length movie in 1947. It was called Snow Trail. His friend Akira Kurosawa wrote the story for this film. Snow Trail was also the first movie for actor Toshirō Mifune. Actress Setsuko Wakayama also starred in it. This movie helped Taniguchi become known for making exciting action films.
Taniguchi and Setsuko Wakayama got married in 1949. They later divorced in 1956. In 1957, Taniguchi married his third wife, actress Kaoru Yachigusa. They stayed together for more than 50 years, until he passed away.
Notable Works
Senkichi Taniguchi also wrote the story for the 1949 film, The Quiet Duel. This movie was directed by Akira Kurosawa and also starred Toshirō Mifune. One of Taniguchi's most well-known films as a director was Escape at Dawn. This movie came out in 1950 and was a strong anti-war film.
He continued to direct many movies in the 1950s and 1960s. Some of his films from this time include Man Against Man, The Gambling Samurai, and A Man in the Storm. His 1963 film, The Lost World of Sinbad, was an adventure story.
A fun fact about his 1965 movie, International Secret Police: Key of Keys, is that it was later changed and re-released. The American comedian and filmmaker Woody Allen re-dubbed it and called it What's Up, Tiger Lily?. Taniguchi was also chosen to be the main director for the official documentary of Expo '70, a big world's fair held in Japan.
Later Life
Senkichi Taniguchi passed away on October 29, 2007. He was 95 years old. He died from pneumonia at a hospital in Tokyo, Japan.
