Sequiera is a small village, also called a "pueblo," located in the southern part of the Artigas Department in northwestern Uruguay.

Exploring Sequiera's Location

Sequiera is found along Route 4, specifically at the 125-kilometer mark. It is about 80 kilometers south-southwest of Artigas. Artigas is the main city of the department.

The village is also about 127 kilometers east-northeast of Salto. Salto is the capital city of the Salto Department.

Sequiera is nestled between two small streams. To the east is Arroyo Sequeira. To the west is Zanja de los Talas. Both of these streams flow into the Río Arapey Chico. This river is located about 4.5 kilometers south of the village.

A Look at Sequiera's Past

The name Sequiera comes from a Guaraní-mission commander named Ramón Sequeira. In 1832, Ramón Sequeira had a conflict with the government led by Fructuoso Rivera. On June 5 of that year, Sequeira's group was defeated by troops. These troops were led by Bernabé Rivera near the Arapey Chico river.

In 1997, a strong tornado hit the village. It destroyed many of the traditional homes, which were made of wood and mud. After the tornado, Sequiera was completely rebuilt. New, stronger buildings were constructed. These buildings are now spread out on both sides of Route 4.

Sequiera officially became a "Pueblo" (village) on November 2, 2001. This change happened through a law called Ley 17.413.
