Sereno is a small, unincorporated community in Perry County, Missouri, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, but is part of a larger county. Sereno is located in Bois Brule Township. It is about five miles northeast of a town called Perryville.
How Sereno Got Its Name
The first people who settled in this area wanted to call it Serena. This name meant "a clean, respectable place." However, when they tried to open a post office, they found out there was already another place in Missouri named Serena. So, they changed the name slightly to Sereno.
Sereno's Story
Sereno started to grow in 1884. A man named Thomas Moore gave some of his land to William Mattingly. This land was used to build a general store, which is like a small shop that sells many different things. Soon after, a grist mill was built. A grist mill is a place where grain is ground into flour.
Sereno also had its own post office. It was open from 1888 until 1905, helping people send and receive mail. In 1908, the community, which was mostly Catholic, established its own church called Our Lady of Victory Catholic parish.
