Sergey Mikhaylovich Solovyov

Sergey Mikhaylovich Solovyov (born May 17, 1820, died October 16, 1879) was a very important Russian historian. He taught many future historians, like Vasily Klyuchevsky. His son, Vladimir Solovyov, became a famous philosopher. His other children, Vsevolod Solovyov and Polyxena Solovyova, were also writers and artists.

Who Was Sergey Solovyov?

Sergey Solovyov studied at Moscow State University. He learned a lot about history there. After his studies, he traveled around Europe. He worked as a tutor for the children of Count Stroganov. This travel helped him learn even more about the world.

Solovyov's Career at Moscow University

In 1845, Solovyov started working at Moscow State University. He became a professor and later the dean. The dean is like the head of a department. He also managed the Kremlin Armoury. He even taught the future Russian ruler, Alexander III of Russia.

His Big History Book

Solovyov's most famous work is his "History of Russia from the Earliest Times." This huge book was very detailed and covered a long period. He published 29 volumes of this history. He worked on it from 1851 until he passed away.

He also wrote other popular books. These included "History of Poland's Downfall" (1863). Another well-known work was "Public Readings on Peter the Great" (1872).
