Sergio Castillo's Football Journey
Sergio Castillo has played for many teams in his career. He has been a part of both American and Canadian football leagues.
Starting with the Atlanta Falcons
After college, Sergio was not chosen in the 2014 NFL draft. However, the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League signed him on June 12, 2014. He played in one preseason game. He made both of his field goal attempts. He also kicked off twice, averaging 66 yards. The Falcons already had a strong kicker, so Sergio was released on August 9, 2014.
First Time with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers
On August 28, 2015, Sergio joined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He was on their practice team at first. The team's main kicker was having trouble. So, Sergio got his chance to play on October 10, 2015. He played against the BC Lions. In his first game, he was perfect, making all five of his field goal tries. He stayed the team's kicker for the last four games. He finished the season with 10 field goals out of 13 attempts.
In 2016, the Blue Bombers signed a new kicker, Justin Medlock. Justin was a very accurate kicker. He won the starting job. Sergio was placed on the injured list. He did not play any regular season games in 2016. He was released on September 2, 2016.
Playing for the Ottawa Redblacks
Sergio signed with the Ottawa Redblacks on September 11, 2016. He filled in for an injured punter. He punted in two games. He had 13 punts and averaged 45.2 yards. He was released by the team on September 26, 2016.
Time with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats
On May 28, 2017, Sergio joined the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He competed for the kicker spot and won all three kicking jobs. This was a great year for him. He made 29 out of 34 field goals. He also made 20 out of 21 extra points. He punted 93 times, averaging 45.1 yards. He played 14 games that season.
However, on October 6, 2017, Sergio got a serious knee injury (ACL). This happened while he was trying to tackle someone after a missed field goal. The injury ended his season. He was released by the team on February 24, 2018.
Second Time with the Ottawa Redblacks
Sergio signed with the Redblacks again on April 9, 2018. He had just recovered from his knee injury. He tried out for a kicker position. But he was not able to secure a spot on the team. He did not play in the 2018 CFL season.
Brief Stint with San Antonio Commanders
On August 6, 2018, Sergio was one of the first players to sign with the San Antonio Commanders. This was a new league called the Alliance of American Football. However, he was released on January 19, 2019. He did not play in any games for them.
First Time with the BC Lions
On May 26, 2019, Sergio signed with the BC Lions. He started the season handling all three kicking duties. He began by making his first ten field goal attempts. In a game on July 6, 2019, he missed a field goal that could have won the game. But the kick went far enough that the other team's player stepped out of bounds in the end zone. This gave the Lions a "rouge" point, which won them the game. It was the first game-winning "rouge" since 2002. He finished the season making 41 out of 45 field goals. This was a 91.1% success rate, which was the best in the league. He was named a CFL All-Star for his great performance.
Playing for the Houston Roughnecks
On November 22, 2019, Sergio was drafted by the Houston Roughnecks. This was for the 2020 XFL Supplemental Draft. He played in five games and made five field goals. His contract ended when the league stopped playing on April 10, 2020.
Second Time with the BC Lions
On April 20, 2020, Sergio signed a two-year contract to return to the Lions. The 2020 CFL season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sergio decided to leave his contract with the Lions on August 28, 2020. He wanted to look for chances to play in the NFL.
Time with the New York Jets
On October 14, 2020, Sergio joined the New York Jets practice squad. He was moved to the main team on October 24. This was for a game against the Buffalo Bills. The Jets' regular kicker was injured. Sergio made a field goal and an extra point in that game. He was then moved back to the practice squad. He was promoted to the main team again on October 31. On December 15, 2020, the Jets let Sergio go. This happened after he missed three kicks in a big loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Two days later, the Jets signed him back to their practice squad. His contract with the team ended on January 11, 2021.
Second Time with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers
On October 19, 2021, the Blue Bombers got Sergio's playing rights from the BC Lions. This was part of a trade. Sergio signed with the Blue Bombers on the same day. He quickly became the team's main kicker. He made 7 out of 9 field goals for the rest of the regular season.
Sergio played a very important role in the 108th Grey Cup game. He made all five of his field goals. He also made one extra point. In the fourth quarter, he kicked two important "rouges" (single points) with strong winds. The Blue Bombers won the game 33-25 in overtime. These were Sergio's first CFL playoff games. It was also his first Grey Cup championship!
Playing for the Edmonton Elks
On March 14, 2022, Sergio signed a two-year contract with the Edmonton Elks. He played in all 18 regular season games. He made 37 out of 44 field goal attempts (84.1%). He also made 26 out of 29 extra point attempts (89.7%). He was released by the team on May 4, 2023.
