Sergio Castillo's Football Journey

Starting with the Atlanta Falcons

Sergio Castillo was not chosen in the 2014 NFL draft. However, he signed with the Atlanta Falcons in the National Football League (NFL) on June 12, 2014. He joined as a free agent placekicker.

Sergio played in the Falcons' first preseason game. He successfully kicked two field goals. He also averaged 66.0 yards on two kickoffs. But he was released on August 9, 2014, as the team already had a strong kicker.

First Time with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers

On August 28, 2015, Castillo joined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He started on their practice team. The team's main kicker was having trouble. So, Sergio got his chance.

He made his first professional game appearance on October 10, 2015. He was perfect, making all five of his field goal attempts. He continued as the team's kicker for the last four games. He finished that season with 10 field goals out of 13 tries.

In 2016, the Blue Bombers signed a new kicker, Justin Medlock. Justin was very accurate, so he became the starter. Sergio was on the injured list and did not play. He was released on September 2, 2016.

Playing for the Ottawa Redblacks

Sergio signed with the Ottawa Redblacks on September 11, 2016. He filled in as a punter for an injured player. He punted in two games, averaging 45.2 yards per punt. He was released from the team on September 26, 2016.

Time with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats

On May 28, 2017, Castillo joined the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He competed for the kicker spot and won all three kicking jobs. This was a great year for him.

He made 29 out of 34 field goals. He also made 20 out of 21 extra points. He punted 93 times, averaging 45.1 yards. However, on October 6, 2017, he got a serious knee injury (ACL) while trying to make a tackle. He was released on February 24, 2018.

Second Chance with the Ottawa Redblacks

Castillo signed with the Redblacks again on April 9, 2018. This was after he recovered from his knee injury. He tried to get a kicker position but was not able to secure a spot. He did not play in the 2018 CFL season.

Short Stint with San Antonio Commanders

Sergio was one of the first players to sign with the San Antonio Commanders. This was a new league called the Alliance of American Football. His signing was announced on August 6, 2018. He was released on January 19, 2019, before the league started playing.

First Time with the BC Lions

On May 26, 2019, Castillo signed with the BC Lions. He handled all three kicking duties for the team. He started the season perfectly, making his first ten field goal attempts.

In a game on July 6, 2019, he missed a field goal that could have won the game. But the kick went far enough that the opposing player stepped out of bounds in the end zone. This gave the Lions a "rouge" point, winning the game. He finished the season making 41 out of 45 field goals. This was a league-leading 91.1% success rate. He was named a CFL All-Star.

Playing for the Houston Roughnecks

On November 22, 2019, Castillo was chosen by the Houston Roughnecks. This was in the 2020 XFL Supplemental Draft. He played in five games and made five field goals. His contract ended when the league stopped playing on April 10, 2020.

Second Time with the BC Lions

On April 20, 2020, Castillo signed a two-year contract to rejoin the Lions. The 2020 CFL season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sergio chose to leave his contract with the Lions on August 28, 2020. He wanted to look for opportunities in the NFL.

Time with the New York Jets

On October 14, 2020, Castillo joined the New York Jets practice squad. He was moved to the main team on October 24 for a game. He made a field goal and an extra point in that game. He was later promoted to the active roster on October 31.

On December 15, 2020, the Jets released Castillo. This was after he missed three kicks in a tough loss. He was re-signed to their practice squad two days later. His contract with the team ended on January 11, 2021.

Castillo played a big role in the 108th Grey Cup championship. He made all five of his field goals. He also converted one extra point. He scored two important "rouges" in the fourth quarter. The Blue Bombers won 33-25 in overtime. This was Sergio's first CFL playoff experience and his first Grey Cup championship.

Playing for the Edmonton Elks

On March 14, 2022, Castillo signed a two-year contract with the Edmonton Elks. He played in all 18 regular season games. He made 37 out of 44 field goal attempts (84.1%). He also made 26 out of 29 extra point attempts (89.7%). He was released by the Elks on May 4, 2023.

Third Time with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Soon after leaving Edmonton, Castillo signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers again. This happened on May 4, 2023. He continues to play for them today.
