Early Life and Youth Teams
When Sergio was three years old, his family moved to Japan. This was because of his father's football career. He started playing football for a local club team there. After five years in Japan, he moved to Argentina. In Argentina, Sergio joined the youth team of Club Atlético Vélez Sársfield. His father and uncle, Osvaldo Salvador Escudero, had also played for this club. Sergio was even invited to train with the Argentina national team for players under 15.
In 2001, Sergio returned to Japan. He joined the junior youth team of Kashiwa Reysol. Later, he moved to the Urawa Red Diamonds junior youth team. He was a great scorer in youth league matches. In 2005, he signed a professional contract with Urawa Reds.
Starting as a Professional Player
Sergio made his first professional appearance on April 15, 2005. He was only 16 years, 8 months, and 21 days old. This made him one of the youngest players to debut in the J. League Division 1. In 2006, a German team, VfB Stuttgart, showed interest in him. However, Urawa Reds decided to keep him.
Playing for Japan
On June 11, 2007, Sergio became a Japanese citizen. This meant he could play for the Japan U-20 team. He hoped to play in the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada. However, he couldn't join the team because the squad was already chosen before he got his citizenship. In May 2008, he joined the Japan U-23 national team. He played in the 2008 Toulon Tournament and scored a goal against Ivory Coast.
Moving to South Korea and China
On July 17, 2012, Sergio joined the South Korean team FC Seoul. He was on a six-month loan. He scored his first goal for them on July 21. By the end of that season, he had scored four goals and helped with three assists. His loan deal became permanent in December. In the 2013 AFC Champions League Final, he scored the first goal. He also helped his teammate Dejan Damjanovic score a goal. Sergio was named the Man of the Match for his excellent performance.
