Service Creek is a small, unincorporated community in Wheeler County, Oregon. An unincorporated community is a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It is located along Oregon Route 19, close to where it meets Oregon Route 207. The community is also near a stream called Service Creek, which flows into the John Day River.

History of Service Creek

The Post Office

A post office was set up in Service Creek in 1918. At first, it was called Sarvicecreek. Rosa Mae Tilley was the first person in charge of the post office. Later that same year, the name was changed to Servicecreek. In 1929, it was changed again to Service Creek, with a space between the words. The post office served the community until it closed in 1956.

The Community Schoolhouse

From 1908 until the mid-1940s, Service Creek had a special building. It was a one-room schoolhouse where children learned their lessons. This building was also used as a community center for everyone. People gathered there for meetings and even for church services. In the late 1940s or early 1950s, the old schoolhouse was taken down. This was done to make space for improvements to the highway.
