Seth Padelford's Life and Work
Seth Padelford was born in Taunton, Massachusetts. When he was older, he worked as a grocer, selling food and household items. He also became involved in local government. He served on the City Council in Providence, Rhode Island. He was also part of the Providence School Committee, which helped manage the city's schools. Padelford was a Unitarian, which is a type of Christian faith. He was also a strong abolitionist. This means he believed that slavery should be ended completely. He worked with groups like the New England Emigrant Aid Company. This company helped people who wanted to move to new territories and oppose slavery there.
In 1860, the Republican Party chose Padelford to run for Governor of Rhode Island. He ran against William Sprague IV. Sprague won that election.
After the American Civil War started in 1861, Padelford continued his political career. He was elected Lieutenant Governor two times. He served in this role from 1863 to 1865.
Then, in 1869, he was elected Governor. He served four terms as governor before deciding to step down.
