Understanding the Governor's Role
The governor of Rhode Island has many important jobs. They make sure the state runs smoothly. They also represent Rhode Island to other states and the country.
Rhode Island's Journey to Statehood
Rhode Island was one of the first 13 colonies in America. It became a state on May 29, 1790. Before that, it was a colony ruled by Great Britain.
How the Governor's Job Changed Over Time
When Rhode Island first became a state, the rules for the governor were simple. The governor and a deputy were elected as needed.
In 1842, a new state constitution was created. This set the governor's term to one year. The term started on the first Tuesday of May.
Later, in 1911, the term changed again. It became two years long. This term started in January.
Then, in 1992, the term was made four years long. A governor can serve two terms in a row. After a break, they can run for governor again. If the governor's office becomes empty, the lieutenant governor steps in. The governor and lieutenant governor are not elected together as a team.
