Severino José Cavalcanti Ferreira (born December 18, 1930 – died July 15, 2020) was an important Brazilian politician. He was born in João Alfredo, a city in the state of Pernambuco. He was a member of the Progressive Party for a long time, but he also belonged to several other political parties during his career. He served in many important roles, including mayor of his hometown, a member of the Pernambuco State Assembly, and a federal congressman.

Early Life and Political Start
Severino Cavalcanti was born in João Alfredo, Pernambuco. He began his political journey by serving his local community. His first term as mayor of João Alfredo was from July 1964 to January 1966. This early experience helped him understand how government works.
Serving Pernambuco
After his time as mayor, Cavalcanti became a State Deputy of Pernambuco. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Pernambuco for a very long time, from February 1967 until February 1995. This meant he helped make laws and decisions for the entire state of Pernambuco for almost 30 years.
National Role as Federal Deputy
In February 1995, Severino Cavalcanti became a Federal Deputy for Pernambuco. This meant he represented his state in the Chamber of Deputies in Brazil's capital, Brasília. As a federal deputy, he worked on national laws and policies.
President of the Chamber of Deputies
In 2005, Cavalcanti ran for the position of President of the Chamber of Deputies. This is a very important job, like being the leader of the main law-making body in Brazil. He was elected to this high office on February 14, 2005. He served as President until September 21, 2005. After he left the position, the Vice-President, José Thomaz Nonô, temporarily took over.
Return to Local Politics
After his time in national politics, Severino Cavalcanti returned to serve his hometown. In October 2008, he was elected again as the mayor of João Alfredo. He served this term from January 2009 to December 2012, continuing his long career of public service.
