Severo Sarduy (born February 25, 1937 – died June 8, 1993) was a famous Cuban writer. He was a talented poet, author, and playwright. He also wrote about literature and art.

About Severo Sarduy's Life

Severo Sarduy was born in Camagüey, Cuba. His family came from Spanish, African, and Chinese backgrounds. He was a very good student in high school.

Early Life and Studies

In 1956, Severo moved to Havana. There, he started studying medicine. After the Cuban revolution happened, he began working with newspapers. These papers, like Diario libre and Lunes de revolución, supported the new government.

Moving to Paris

In 1960, Sarduy traveled to Paris, France. He went there to study art at the Ecole du Louvre. While in Paris, he joined a group of smart thinkers. They worked together on a magazine called Tel Quel.

Severo Sarduy also worked for a publishing company called Editions du Seuil. He helped choose books to publish. He also worked for French radio and television. He was an editor and producer there. When his scholarship ended, he decided to stay in Paris and not return to Cuba.

His Achievements

Severo Sarduy became a very successful writer. In 1972, his novel Cobra won a big award. It was called the Medici Prize for the best translated novel. He was known as one of the most brilliant essay writers in Spanish. Many people also thought he was one of the greatest poets of his time.

Besides writing, Sarduy also painted. He kept his painting mostly private. After he passed away, a large show of his artwork was held. It was at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid.

Later Years and Legacy

Severo Sarduy finished his book Pájaros de la playa shortly before he died. This book was about his own life. It was later translated into English as Beach Birds.

Even today, it can be hard for people in Cuba to read his books. However, his writings are available to readers in France and other countries around the world.
