Sevil Shhaideh is a Romanian economist and politician. She was born on December 4, 1964. In 2016, she was suggested to become the Prime Minister of Romania. If she had been chosen, she would have been the first woman and the first Muslim to hold this important position in Romania. However, the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, did not approve her nomination.
Early Life and Education
Sevil Shhaideh was born in Constanța, a city in Romania. Her family has roots from the Crimean Tatar and Turkish communities.
She studied at the Academy of Economic Sciences in Bucharest. In 1987, she graduated from the Faculty of Economic Planning and Cybernetics. This education helped her prepare for a career in public service.
Career in Government
After finishing her studies, Sevil Shhaideh began working in public administration. She worked for Constanța County, where she became a leader in managing projects. She also helped coordinate a national group for county councils in Romania.
In 2012, she started working as a secretary of state in the Ministry of Regional Development. This role involved helping to manage development projects across different regions.
From May to November 2015, she served as the Minister of Regional Development and Public Administration. She was part of the government led by Victor Ponta.
In December 2016, two political parties, the Social Democrats and ALDE, suggested Sevil Shhaideh to be the next Prime Minister. This was a very important proposal because she would have been the first woman and the first Muslim to lead the government in Romania. However, the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, decided not to approve her for the role.
Personal Life
Sevil Shhaideh's family follows the Sunni Muslim faith. They are part of the long-standing Turkish and Tatar ethnic groups in Romania. Her mother is related to a well-known Turkish historian named Kemal Karpat.
She is married to Akram Shhaideh, a businessman. They got married in 2011.
