History of Seville, Florida

Founding the Town

Seville was started in 1882 by a man named William Kemble Lente. He was a vice president for the Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railway. He chose this spot because it was right along the railroad tracks. This made it a good place to build a new community.

Early Development

Lente worked hard to develop Seville. He opened the Bank of Seville. He also built a large brick house for himself. He teamed up with some investors from the northern United States. Together, they planned to build a grand hotel. They also built a complex water system. This system cost a lot of money, about $60,000 back then.

Challenges and Changes

Over time, the relationship between Lente and his investors became difficult. It grew very bitter. William Lente passed away in his Seville home in 1889. Today, Seville is a quiet community. It has limited businesses and is mostly rural. Many people work in farming. It is located just north of Pierson along U.S. Route 17.
