The rupee is the money used in the country of Seychelles. It's divided into 100 smaller parts called cents. In the local language, Seychellois Creole, it's called roupi. In French, it's called roupie. The special code for this money is SCR. Sometimes, people use "SR" to make sure everyone knows it's the Seychelles Rupee. Seychelles is the smallest country in the world to manage its own money system. Other countries also use money called a rupee.

History of Seychelles Money

Early Banknotes: British Colony Days

Back in 1914, when Seychelles was a British colony, the government started printing its own money. This was an emergency measure during a difficult time. They made notes for 50 cents, 1 rupee, 5 rupees, and 10 rupees.

Later, in 1918, they started printing regular banknotes. These included 50 cents and 1 rupee notes. In 1928, they added 5, 10, and 50 rupee notes. The smaller 50 cent and 1 rupee notes were used until 1951, then coins took their place. In 1968, new 20 and 100 rupee notes were introduced. The 5 rupee note was replaced by a coin in 1972.

Money in an Independent Seychelles

When Seychelles became an independent country in 1976, a new group called the Seychelles Monetary Authority started printing money. They made notes for 10, 25, 50, and 100 rupees. These new notes featured Sir James Mancham, who was the first President of the Seychelles. They replaced all the old money from when Seychelles was a colony.

In 1979, the banknotes got a new look. They were designed to show a more modern style. The Central Bank of Seychelles took over printing money that same year.

New Designs and Security Features

Over the years, the banknotes kept getting updates. In 1989, a new series of notes came out with better security features and brighter colors. Then, in 1998, another high-tech series was introduced. These notes had a more user-friendly design. A new 500 rupee note was added to this series in 2005.

Updates in 2011

On June 7, 2011, the Central Bank of Seychelles updated the 50, 100, and 500 rupee notes. They added better security features to make them harder to copy.

  • The 50 rupee note now has a special silver picture that changes between the number 50 and an image of the Aldabra rail, which is a bird that cannot fly.
  • The 100 rupee note has a gold picture that changes between the number 100 and a picture of the Seychelles giant tortoise.
  • The 500 rupee note has a gold picture that changes between the number 500 and a picture of the Seychelles scops owl.

These notes also have special security threads that glow under ultraviolet light. The colors of the notes were also changed slightly to be more green, red, and orange. The new notes also show the year they were printed and the signature of the bank's governor, Pierre Frank Laporte. The older notes are still good to use and will be slowly taken out of circulation as they wear out.

Changes in 2016

In December 2016, the Central Bank of Seychelles released a brand new series of banknotes. This was to celebrate 40 years since Seychelles became independent. The theme for these new notes is "Seychelles' Unique Biodiversity - the backbone of the economy." This means the notes show off the amazing plants and animals that are special to Seychelles, which are very important for the country's economy.
