Shams Al Din Badran (Arabic: شمس الدين بدران; 19 April 1929 – 28 November 2020) was an Egyptian government official. He served as the Minister of Defence for Egypt. This was during the time of President Gamal Abdel Nasser. He held this important role during the Six-Day War in 1967. After the war, he was removed from his position and later held in prison. When he was released, he moved to the United Kingdom. He lived there by his own choice.

Early Life and School

Shams Al Din Badran was born on 19 April 1929. He went to a special military school. He finished his studies there in 1948. He took part in the 1947–1949 Palestine war. For his bravery in that war, he received a special award called the Gold Medal of Merit. This award came from Farouk of Egypt, who was the king at the time. Later, he received a scholarship to study military topics in France.

His Career and Role

In the mid-1960s, Badran was in charge of Egypt's military security. He also worked closely with Field Marshal Abdul Hakim Amer. Amer was a very important military leader under President Gamal Abdel Nasser. Badran was one of Amer's main helpers.

Badran became the Minister of Defence in late 1966. This was just a few months before the Six-Day War began in June 1967. He took over from Abdel Wahab Al Bishri. Field Marshal Amer had supported Badran getting this job. In the same year, Badran was also made the chief of President Nasser's office.

On 25 May 1967, Badran traveled to Moscow. He met with important Soviet leaders, including Prime Minister Alexei Kosygin. He wanted to get their support because of a possible threat from Israel. Badran left his job during the Six-Day War. Amin Howeidi then became the new defence minister.

After the War

After Egypt's defeat in the Six-Day War, Badran was held accountable for events during his time in office. He was held in prison starting on 25 August 1967. He was tried in court for his role in the 1967 war. Badran and Salah Nasr, who was a former intelligence chief, were found responsible for some of the issues that led to the defeat. They were sentenced to hard labor.

President Anwar Sadat released Badran from prison on 23 May 1974. After his release, Badran left Egypt. He went to live in London, United Kingdom. In 2014, he shared parts of his life story in a newspaper called Al-Siyasa in Kuwait.

His Family Life

Shams Badran married his first wife, Muna Rushdie, on 7 June 1962. They had one daughter together named Hiba. They later divorced in January 1989. This happened because he had been away for three years. His first wife worked at The American University in Cairo.

In the 1970s, he married a British woman. They had two children together. Badran lived with his family in the United Kingdom. He chose to live there away from his home country. One of his children later moved to Saudi Arabia, and another moved to the United States.

Shams Badran passed away on 28 November 2020. He died in the University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust in the UK. However, he had wished to be buried in Egypt.
