Shane Confectionery is a very old candy shop and candy maker. It is located at 110 Market Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Brothers Ryan and Eric Berley own it today. It is thought to be the longest-running candy business in the United States. The first candy business opened there in 1863. They are famous for making old-fashioned candies. These include buttercream chocolates and Pennsylvania clear toy candy.

History of Shane Confectionery

Candy and candy-making supplies have been sold at 110 Market Street since 1863. This street was once called High Street. Philadelphia was a big center for making candy. This was because of the large sugar trade. In 1910, Philadelphia had about 1,200 candy shops!

The Herring family started candy businesses in the area in the 1840s. Samuel L. Herring opened a candy supply store in 1863. His son, Benjamin W. Herring, took over after the American Civil War. He later partnered with Daniel S. Dengler, a candy maker.

Daniel S. Dengler and his son, Frank Dengler, ran the business until 1899. Then, William T. Wescott bought the building. In 1910, Edward R. Shane bought the business from Wescott. Edward's son, Barry Shane, took over in 1983. The Shane family ran the shop for 99 years.

Modern Restoration

In 2010, brothers Ryan and Eric Berley bought the business. They decided to keep the name "Shane Confectionery." They have carefully fixed up the building. They also restored old items like scales and the cash register.

The brothers use old machines and traditional recipes to make their sweets. For example, their cast-iron buttercream churn was used by Edward Shane in the 1920s. Shane Confectionery is close to their other old-fashioned shop. This is a vintage ice-cream shop called the Franklin Fountain.

Delicious Candy Specialties

Shane Confectionery makes many traditional and special candies. They are well-known for their wrapped buttercream chocolates. They also make clear toy candy for holidays. These holidays include Christmas and Easter.
