Shannon Lamont Mitchell, born on March 28, 1972, is a former American football player. He played as a tight end for the San Diego Chargers in the National Football League (NFL) for four seasons. Before joining the NFL, he played college football at the University of Georgia.
Growing Up in Alcoa
Shannon Mitchell grew up in Alcoa, Tennessee. He was born there on March 28, 1972. He went to Alcoa High School in his hometown.
College Football Career
Mitchell played college football for the Georgia Bulldogs from 1990 to 1993. He was a "letterman" for four years, meaning he played well enough to earn a special award each season.
In his senior year, 1993, he had his best season. He caught 49 passes for 539 yards and scored two Touchdowns. Because of his great performance, he was named first-team All-SEC. This means he was one of the best players in the Southeastern Conference that year.
Playing in the NFL
After college, Shannon Mitchell signed with the San Diego Chargers in 1994. Even though he wasn't chosen in the NFL draft, he still made it to the professional league.
In his first year, 1994, he played in all 16 games for the Chargers. He caught 11 passes for 105 yards. He also played in three playoff games that season, helping his team.
He continued to play in all 16 games for the Chargers in 1995 and 1996. In 1995, he scored his first NFL touchdown. He played his last season with the Chargers in 1997.
