About Shannon Thunderbird
Shannon Thunderbird was born in British Columbia, Canada. She is an Elder, which means she is a respected leader, from the Giluts'aaw tribe. She belongs to the Royal House of Niis'gumiik and the Gispwudwada (Orca) Clan.
Her Work as an Artist and Educator
Shannon is known for sharing traditional Indigenous knowledge. She does this through workshops, drumming circles, and stage shows. She also shares her wisdom in her writings.
She often performs with her partner, Sandy Horne, who is from the Canadian band the Spoons. They have performed all over Canada, Europe, and Asia. They have also taught many students in schools and colleges across Canada and the United States.
Teya Peya Productions
In 1991, Shannon started her own company called Teya Peya Productions. This company focuses on First Nations arts and education. It includes the Thunderbird Native Theatre and the Red Cedar Sisters Vocal Trio.
Her Touring Shows and Workshops
Shannon Thunderbird has many popular touring shows. Some of these include "Eagle Thunder: Song of Hope" and "Daughter of the Copper Shield." She also leads workshops like "Thunder Wolf," where people learn songwriting, vocals, and drumming. Standing Up for Indigenous Rights
Shannon is a strong supporter of Indigenous rights. She speaks out about the unfairness of the Indian Act of 1876. She also believes in teaching about anti-colonial history. Shannon works to raise the importance of Indigenous art. She also supports the right of Indigenous women to take part in drumming.
