Shaolin Sándor Liu (born November 20, 1995) is an amazing short track speed skater. He is an Olympic champion! Shaolin has won a gold medal and a bronze medal at the Winter Olympics. He won these medals as part of the Hungarian team in relay races. He competed for Hungary from 2013 to 2022. Since 2023, he has been competing for China.

Shaolin's Skating Journey

Shaolin Sándor Liu grew up in Hungary. His father is Chinese, and his mother is Hungarian. He started short track speed skating in 2006. Before skating, he and his younger brother, Shaoang Liu, tried swimming. But they often got sick, so they looked for a different sport. That's how they found speed skating!

Training in China

In 2006, the World Championships were held in Hungary. Shaolin's father helped the Chinese team during their visit. The Chinese team suggested that Shaolin and his brother should train in China. This was because they are half-Chinese. So, Shaolin's father took the boys to China, where they trained for about a year and a half.

After they came back from China, they started winning many smaller competitions in Europe. In 2012, a coach named Zhang Jing came from China to train Shaolin and his brother.

Olympic and World Success

Shaolin first represented Hungary at the 2014 Winter Olympics. He won several medals at the World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championships. He also placed third overall at the 2016 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships.

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Shaolin finished fifth in the men's 1500-meter race. Then, he won a gold medal in the 5000-meter relay! This was a huge moment because it was Hungary's very first Winter Olympics gold medal ever.

At the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, Shaolin had a mixed experience. He finished first in the men's 1000-meter final, but he was later disqualified because of a rule violation. However, he did win a bronze medal in the mixed 2000-meter relay.

Changing Nationality

In November 2022, Shaolin and his brother asked the Hungarian National Skating Federation if they could change which country they compete for. Their request was approved a month later, in December. Because of the rules, they had to take a break from competing for 12 months before they could race for their new country. Since 2023, Shaolin has been competing for China.

About Shaolin's Life

Shaolin's younger brother, Shaoang Liu, is also a very talented short track speed skater. Shaolin's father is from Tianjin, China. Even though Shaolin was born in Hungary, he speaks Chinese with a special accent. This is because he spent time training in the northeastern part of China.
