Sharon Lorencia Horgan (born 13 July 1970) is an Irish actress, writer, director, producer, and comedian. She is famous for creating and starring in popular TV comedy shows. These include Pulling (2006–2009), Catastrophe (2015–2019), and Bad Sisters (2022–present).
She also created other comedy series like Divorce (2016–2019) and Motherland (2016–2022). Sharon Horgan has appeared in many movies too. Some of these are Game Night (2018) and Military Wives (2019).
Horgan has won several awards for her work. She received the British Comedy Award for Best TV Actress for Pulling in 2008. She also won a BAFTA TV Award for Best Comedy Writer for Catastrophe in 2016. In 2023, she won a BAFTA TV Award for Best Drama Series for Bad Sisters.

Early Life
Sharon Horgan was born in Hackney, London, England. Her mother is Irish, and her father is from New Zealand. When she was four, her family moved to Bellewstown, County Meath, Ireland. There, her parents ran a turkey farm.
Sharon is one of five children. She later used her childhood memories for a short film called The Week Before Christmas. She went to the Sacred Heart convent school in Drogheda.
Career
Starting Out
When Sharon Horgan was a young actress, she took many different jobs to earn money. At 27, she started studying English and American Studies at Brunel University. She finished her degree in 2000.
Around that time, she met writer Dennis Kelly while working in youth theatre. They started writing together. In 2001, they won the BBC New Comedy Award for their sketch writing and performance.
Acting Roles
Sharon Horgan has acted on stage, television, and in movies. Her first TV appearances were in sketch shows like The State We're In (2002). She also helped write for the show Monkey Dust (2003). Her first main acting role was in Absolute Power (2003).
In 2005, she made her movie debut in Imagine Me & You. She also starred in Pulling, which she co-wrote. She played Donna, a marketing manager who cancels her wedding.
Horgan appeared in Rob Brydon's Annually Retentive (2006–07). She won a British Comedy Award in 2007 for Best Female Newcomer for her role. In 2010, she was in The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret. She played Alice Bell, a café owner.
In 2012, Horgan was part of Psychobitches, a sketch show. She played famous women from history like Jane Austen and Cleopatra. She is also well known for her role in Catastrophe. She co-created this show with Rob Delaney.
She also appeared in Criminal UK (2020) and This Way Up (2019–present). In movies, she had a supporting role in Game Night (2018). She also acted in Military Wives (2019) and Together (2021).
Sharon Horgan has also done voice acting for animated shows and movies. She voiced Minerva Campbell in Adventure Time and Courtney Portnoy in Bojack Horseman. She is Queen Dagmar in Disenchantment and Kathleen in Bob's Burgers. She also voices Tabitha in Housebroken.
She appeared in the movie Everybody’s Talking About Jamie (2021). In 2022, she had a role in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent with Nicolas Cage.
Writing Stories
Horgan's big break as a writer was Pulling. She co-wrote it with Dennis Kelly and also starred in it. The show became very popular with fans and critics. Even though it was popular, Pulling was canceled after two seasons. A special final episode aired in 2009.
In 2015, Horgan co-wrote and co-starred in Catastrophe with American comedian Rob Delaney. They met on Twitter and decided to work together. The show was based on their own experiences. It was a huge success right away.
Horgan also wrote Divorce (2016-2019), an American comedy series. It starred Sarah Jessica Parker as a woman going through a long divorce. Horgan was also an executive producer for this show. She co-created and co-writes Motherland (2017–present). This show is about the challenges of being a middle-class mom.
She also co-created and produced Shining Vale, a horror-comedy series for Starz.
Directing Films and Shows
In 2012, Sharon Horgan directed her first film, The Week Before Christmas. This film was partly based on her own life. It was set on a turkey farm in Ireland. She played her own mother in the film. She also directed an episode of the Amazon series Modern Love (2019).
Presenting TV Shows
In 2005, Horgan co-presented the first series of The Friday Night Project. This was a comedy show on Channel 4. In 2011, she was a guest host on Have I Got News for You on BBC1.
She has also presented documentaries for Channel 4. In these shows, she explored topics like how families raise children and how couples make their relationships work.
Her Production Company: Merman
In 2014, Sharon Horgan started her own production company called Merman. She co-founded it with Clelia Mountford. They met while working on The Week Before Christmas. Merman now has offices in London, New York City, and Los Angeles.
Merman has helped produce many TV shows. These include Divorce, Catastrophe, and Motherland. They also produced Frayed (2019–present), a show about a wealthy London housewife who returns to Australia.
Merman also created There She Goes (2018–present). This show is about a girl with severe learning disabilities and her family. For Channel 4 and Hulu, Merman produces This Way Up (2019-present). Sharon Horgan also stars in this show as Shona.
Merman has also produced movies, like Herself (2021). This film is about a family trying to find a home during the Irish housing crisis. Merman has won and been nominated for many awards for its work.
Personal Life
Sharon Horgan married businessman Jeremy Rainbird on 16 October 2005. They lived in London with their two daughters. They divorced in 2019.
Her younger brother, Shane Horgan, is a former international rugby union player. He played for Leinster and Ireland. He is now a rugby analyst. Her youngest brother, Mark Horgan, is known for his podcast Where is George Gibney?.
