Sharon Pritchett was born on August 17, 1951. She is a politician from the Democratic Party in Florida. She served for four terms in the Florida House of Representatives. She represented District 102, which covered parts of Miami-Dade County and Broward County. Her time in office was from 2012 to 2020.
Sharon Pritchett's Early Life and Career
Sharon Pritchett was born in Miami. She went to St. Thomas University. There, she earned a college degree in Criminal Justice in 1978. She then got a master's degree in Administration of Justice in 1980.
After finishing college, she worked as a public investigator. She helped people who could not afford a lawyer in Miami-Dade County. In 2002, she joined a group that helped create the city of Miami Gardens. Soon after the city was formed, she was elected to the Miami Gardens City Council. She served on the City Council from 2003 to 2011.
Later, Sharon Pritchett ran in a special election for the 103rd District. This district included parts of Broward County and Miami-Dade County. She ran in the Democratic primary election in February 2011. She faced other candidates, including Barbara Watson. After a very close election, she did not win.
Serving in the Florida House of Representatives
In 2012, Florida's voting districts were changed. Sharon Pritchett then ran in the new 102nd District. This new district included much of the area from the old 103rd District. She won the Democratic primary election with 58% of the votes. In the main election, she did not have any opponents. This meant she was elected to her first term without a challenge.
While working in the legislature, Sharon Pritchett worked with State Senator Rene Garcia. He was a Republican. They worked together to create a law about vision screenings for students. This law would require "mandatory vision screenings for students entering the public school system for the first time."
Pritchett explained why this was important. She said, "We often hear about children who are not doing their best. They might not be doing well because they can't see. They may have never had an eye exam." She believed this law would help identify children who need glasses early.
In 2014, Sharon Pritchett was re-elected for her second term. Again, she did not have any opponents. She continued to serve in the Florida House of Representatives. She was able to serve for a total of four terms. In 2020, she reached the limit for how many terms she could serve in the House.
