Early Life and Education
Sharon Pritchett was born in Miami. She went to St. Thomas University. There, she earned two degrees. In 1978, she received her first degree in Criminal Justice. Then, in 1980, she earned a master's degree in Administration of Justice.
Working as an Investigator
After finishing her studies, Sharon Pritchett became a public investigator. She worked for the Public Defender's Office in Miami-Dade County. In this role, she helped people who needed legal support.
Serving on the City Council
In 2002, Pritchett was part of a group that helped create the city of Miami Gardens. Soon after the city was officially formed, she was elected to its City Council. She served on the Miami Gardens City Council from 2003 to 2011.
Time in the Florida House of Representatives
In 2012, new legislative districts were created in Florida. Sharon Pritchett decided to run for office in the new 102nd District. This district included much of the area she had served before.
Winning the Election
Pritchett faced another candidate, Melvin Bratton, in the Democratic primary election. She won by a good amount, getting 58% of the votes. In the main election, she did not have an opponent. This meant she was elected to her first term without a challenge.
Helping Students with Vision Screenings
While working in the legislature, Pritchett helped create an important law. She worked with State Senator Rene Garcia, who was a Republican. They sponsored a bill to make sure all students entering public school for the first time had their vision checked.
Pritchett explained why this was so important. She said, "Many times, we hear about children who are not doing their best in school. This is often because they cannot see well. They might have never had an eye exam." She believed this law would help identify children who needed glasses early on.
Re-election and Term Limits
In 2014, Sharon Pritchett was re-elected for her second term. Again, she did not face any opposition. She continued to serve in the Florida House of Representatives.
She served a total of four terms. In 2020, she reached the limit for how long she could serve in the House. This is called being "term-limited." After serving for eight years, her time in the legislature came to an end.
