History of Shartlesville
Shartlesville was founded a long time ago, in 1765. The town got its name from the Shartle family. They were farmers and also ran inns, which were like hotels for travelers back then. A notable person from this family was Peter Shartle. He was an early settler and even served as a colonel during the American Revolutionary War.
Geography and Location
This American community is found just south of Interstate 78. It sits on the south side of Blue Mountain. Water from Wolf Creek flows south through the area. This creek then joins the Northkill Creek, which is a smaller river that flows into the Tulpehocken Creek.

Shartlesville Hotel
The Shartlesville Hotel is a well-known building in the community. In February 2009, a very strong wind storm caused a lot of damage to its roof. This same storm also affected other places nearby. For example, it knocked down a billboard in Reading, Pennsylvania, and blew off roof tiles from the Pagoda building in eastern Reading.
Roadside America Miniature Village
For many years, Shartlesville was home to a famous attraction called Roadside America. This was a huge display of miniature trains and tiny villages. It was located right off Interstate 78. Roadside America was open to the public from 1953 until 2020. It closed down mostly because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mountain Springs Arena
Just north of Shartlesville, there was a place called the Mountain Springs Arena. This arena hosted many different events. People could go there to see rodeos, concerts, and horse shows. It also held exciting demolition derbies, tractor pulls, and an annual country fair.
