Shattucksburg, Ohio was once a small community that is now part of the big city of Columbus, Ohio. It started around 1850 when a man named Simon Shattuck (1793-1875) from Massachusetts began selling parts of his farm land for people to build on. Simon also ran a general store at a busy intersection of two roads, Henderson Road and Kenny Road. Shattucksburg was located in what is now Perry Township, Franklin County, Ohio.

The Story of Shattucksburg

Shattucksburg began to grow between 1850 and 1856. It was located along what was then Henderson Road, which is now called Old Henderson Road, where it met Kenny Road. Even though people knew it as "Shattucksburg," it was never officially planned or recognized as a town. An old book from 1872, Caldwell's Atlas of Franklin Co. and the City of Columbus Ohio, explained that the place was "generally known as 'Shattucksburg,' though it was never laid out nor intended for a town."

How the Roads Changed

Over the years, the roads around Shattucksburg changed names many times. Before 1914, Kenny Road became Kenny Free Pike, and Henderson Road in that area was renamed Starrett Road. By 1927, Kenny Free Pike went back to being Kenny Road, and Delaware Pike became Delaware Road.

More changes happened before 1941, when Starrett Road was renamed Henderson Road again, and Delaware Road became Olentangy River Road. These changes show how the area was developing and becoming more connected to the growing city of Columbus.

Shattucksburg Disappears from Maps

By the 1970s, the name "Shattucksburg" started to disappear from maps. One of the last maps to show the area as "Shattucksburg" was a 1960 Tract Map of Franklin County, Ohio. Most of the original small roads in the area had also disappeared from maps by 1974, with only Winton Road and Mobile Drive remaining.

Even though it was no longer on maps, Shattucksburg was still mentioned in official city documents. For example, in 1982, The City Bulletin, which is a publication from the City of Columbus city council, mentioned Shattucksburg when discussing land rezoning. This shows that the old community was still a known landmark for people in the area.

Shattucksburg Today

As of 2021, some of the original roads from the Shattucksburg area still exist, like Mobile Drive, Henderson Road (now Old Henderson Road), and Midwest Drive. The land where Shattucksburg once stood is now mostly home to industrial buildings. These include businesses like Evans Adhesive, Dale Cleaners, and The Depot Events Center, which even has a train museum!
