Shawn Christopher Respert (born February 6, 1972) is an American professional basketball coach and former player. He went to Bishop Borgess High School and became well-known playing college basketball at Michigan State. He played professionally in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for four seasons, from 1995 to 1999. In October 2024, he was honored by being added to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.

Shawn Respert's College Basketball Journey

Respert was a fantastic player at Michigan State. He and point guard Eric Snow formed a powerful duo in the backcourt for coach Jud Heathcote's team. Respert was the top scorer for Michigan State in all four of his seasons. He finished his college career with 2,531 points, which was the second-highest score ever among Big Ten players.

He had an amazing senior year in the 1994–95 season. He was named a first-team All-American and the Big Ten Player of the Year. He also won National Player of the Year awards from Sporting News and NABC, averaging 25.6 points per game. When he left East Lansing, he was Michigan State's all-time leading scorer. He also started a tradition where outgoing seniors would kiss the center court logo during their last home game.

Facing a Health Challenge

In 2005, Shawn Respert shared that he had faced a serious health challenge. During his first year in the NBA, he started having stomach cramps and noticed a small lump. After some medical tests, he was diagnosed with a health condition in May 1996. He received daily treatment for three months, which caused him to lose weight. Only a few people knew about his treatment at the time, including the team's trainers, doctors, his coach Mike Dunleavy, Sr., and his college teammate Eric Snow. He kept it private because he felt that in professional sports, people might not understand such a challenge.
