Shawn Ryan (born October 11, 1966) is an American screenwriter and television producer. This means he writes scripts for TV shows and movies, and also helps manage how those shows are made. He has created or produced many popular TV series. Some of his well-known shows include The Shield (2002–2008), The Unit (2006–2009), Lie to Me (2009–11), Timeless (2016–2018), S.W.A.T. (2017–2025), and The Night Agent (2023–present).

Early Life and Interests

Shawn Ryan was born in Rockford, Illinois. His mother worked as a schoolteacher, and his father was an accountant. He has shared that he had a very good family life growing up. As a child, he was very interested in the TV comedy shows from the 1970s.

Shawn Ryan's Career in Television

After finishing college at Middlebury College, Shawn Ryan began his career in television. He won the Norman Lear Playwriting award, which was a big step for him. This award gave him money and the chance to meet important TV producers.

He started as a writer for the show Nash Bridges. Later, he worked as a writer and producer for Angel. He then created and was the main writer for the TV series The Shield. He also worked with David Mamet to manage the show The Unit.

Ryan was the main producer for the second season of Fox's Lie to Me. He also managed and produced FX's Terriers. He created the crime drama The Chicago Code. In 2012, ABC decided to make his show Last Resort. However, the show ended after a short time, and the last episode was changed to give fans a clear ending.

In 2013, CBS considered making a TV show based on the Beverly Hills Cop movies. Shawn Ryan was set to write and produce it with Eddie Murphy. The show would have been about the son of the main character, Axel Foley. However, CBS decided not to make the show.
