Shazzan is an exciting American animated television series created by Alex Toth. It was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions and first aired on CBS. The show ran from September 9, 1967, to January 20, 1968. Reruns continued until September 6, 1969.

The series follows the adventures of two teenage siblings, Chuck and Nancy. They travel through a magical Arabian world. Their transportation is Kaboobie, a friendly flying camel. During their journey, they face many dangers. Luckily, they are helped by Shazzan, a powerful genie with amazing magical powers. A total of 18 half-hour episodes were made. Each episode had two shorter stories, about 11 minutes long.

The Story of Shazzan

Chuck, voiced by Jerry Dexter, and Nancy, voiced by Janet Waldo, discover a mysterious chest. They find it in a cave off the coast of Maine. Inside the chest are two halves of a strange ring. When they join the rings together, they are instantly transported. They find themselves in the fabled land of the Arabian Nights.

There, they meet their powerful genie, Shazzan. Shazzan is voiced by Barney Phillips. He creates a magical flying camel named Kaboobie, voiced by Don Messick. Kaboobie becomes their main way to travel. Shazzan tells Chuck and Nancy that he cannot send them home. They must first deliver the two rings to their rightful owner.

Shazzan is a giant genie, big enough to hold Chuck, Nancy, and Kaboobie in his open hand. He is wise and cheerful. He often appears with a happy "Ho-ho ho-HO!" and calls the children his "little masters." Chuck and Nancy each wear one half of the broken ring. They must join the two halves to call Shazzan.

Often, the two teenagers get separated, usually by a villain. They cannot summon the powerful genie until they find each other again. Once Shazzan appears, it's usually bad news for the villain! The children never find the ring's owner, so they never return to their American lives. This means their adventure continues in every episode.

Adventures in Each Episode

Each half-hour episode of Shazzan tells two separate 11-minute adventure stories. Chuck and Nancy face different challenges in each one. They meet various villains and magical creatures.

Here are some examples of their exciting adventures:

  • The Living Island: Chuck and Nancy land Kaboobie on an island to rest. They soon find themselves hunted by an evil hunter.
  • Master of Thieves: A villain tries to steal Chuck and Nancy's rings for his master.
  • Valley of the Giants: The siblings travel through a valley. There, they encounter a giant cyclops.
  • The Black Sultan: They meet a prince who has been turned into a pig. He needs their help to rescue his princess from a sleeping spell.
  • Demon in the Bottle: Nancy and Chuck find a bottle on an island. When they open it, an Evil Demon emerges, seeking revenge after 4,000 years.
  • City of Brass: Chuck, Nancy, and Kaboobie get lost over the ocean. They land on a ship filled with brass statues that come to life and try to make them slaves.

Other Appearances of Shazzan

Shazzan has also appeared in other cartoon shows:

  • He was in an episode of Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law. Maurice LaMarche voiced him. In this episode, "Mufti Trouble," Shazzan had a long rivalry with another character, Mentok the Mindtaker.
  • Shazzan also appeared in "The Final Encounter," an episode of Space Ghost. Space Ghost falls into a trap that takes him to Shazzan's dimension. Shazzan helps him defeat the Sultan of Flame and sends him back home.
  • A funny version of Shazzan, called Shazzang!, appeared on Saturday Night Live. This was part of Robert Smigel's "TV Funhouse" segment on May 14, 2005. This parody showed Shazzang defeating the villain very quickly. However, he then became overly violent, which shocked Chuck, Nancy, and Kaboobie.
