The Shearwater Aviation Museum is an exciting place to visit in Shearwater, Nova Scotia. It's located at CFB Shearwater, which is a Canadian Forces Base. This museum collects, takes care of, and shares amazing artifacts and documents. These items help us learn about the history of Canadian military aviation, especially planes used by the navy. It's a great spot for both military members and the public to learn and have fun!

Discover the Museum's History

The Shearwater Aviation Museum first opened its doors in 1978. Back then, it was quite small, taking up just one floor of a building on the base. But it grew! In August 1995, the museum moved to a much bigger spot. It reopened in what used to be a gymnasium. Then, in August 2001, even more space was added. This new addition made the museum even larger for visitors to explore.

Explore Cool Exhibits

The museum has many permanent exhibits that you can always see. A main focus is on maritime aviation and naval history. This means you'll learn about planes that flew over the ocean and the history of the navy.

HMCS Bonaventure Exhibit

One special exhibit is about HMCS Bonaventure. This was Canada's very last aircraft carrier. An aircraft carrier is like a floating airport for planes! The exhibit even has a recreated briefing room from the ship. It looks just like it did, complete with the original seats. Imagine sitting where pilots used to get their instructions!

Battle of the Atlantic Map Wall

You can also see a copy of a huge map wall. This map was used by the RCAF Eastern Air Command. They used it to plan and coordinate during the Battle of the Atlantic. This was a very important part of World War II. It shows how they tracked ships and planes to protect convoys.
