Later, in 1835, a man named Abner Kelly planned out the village lots. He started selling them on May 20th of that year. The name "Shelocta" comes from the Iroquois language. It means "Shainee Cabin."

The Shelocta Post Office opened its doors on November 1, 1837. Daniel Metzker was the first postmaster, which is the person in charge of the post office.
